One day at a time
Some of you may well be familiar with the work of Charlie Mackesy, and quotes like the one above from his book ‘The Boy, the mole, the Fox and the Horse’ (well worth a look at if you haven’t come across it before). I guess for many of us there are times in our lives at the moment where it feels hard to think about the way ahead, what the future may or may not look like, and how long we’ll continue in the current situation. A friend of mine sent me a quote last week that said “sometimes the best thing you can do is not think, not wonder, not imagine, not obsess. Just breathe, and have faith that everything will work out for the best.” This has stuck with me and reminded me of words of Jesus in Matthew that remind us of the importance of just taking one day at a time:
“Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time” (Matthew 6:33, TPT)
God knows what we need to get through each day; He sees our need, our struggle, our concern, and hears our prayers. Our Father in Heaven knows what we need, and how to give to us just what we need at just the right time. His grace is, has been, and always will be sufficient to meet our deepest of needs every single day of our lives. The road may seem windy right now, it might seem long and the path dark, but God knows the way, He will lead us as we daily put our trust in Him. And all He asks us to do today is put our hand in His and trust Him for this day, and for this moment.
So maybe today is quite simply just about that – today. Focus on today, do what you can, not what you can’t. Try not to think too far ahead about what may or may not happen, but instead, just embrace today as the gift that it is. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and I guess at some time or another we have all felt like we are, but as we just hold on through today, we’ll find again that God’s grace is enough to get us through. And whether it’s a good day, or whether it’s not, as we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, He’ll keep His eye on us, seeing us through each moment just as He promised He would, one day at a time.
