Hi everyone,
I’m sure many of you will have seen Songs of Praise last Sunday, highlighting the 40th anniversary of the ISS alongside other aspects of the Army’s work. Because of this, I decided that all our songs this week would also feature the ISS.
Our first song was requested by Tracey and takes us back to 1996. Some of you may remember the ‘fun’ we had with the opening chants as we tried to learn it all those years ago! It’s Richard Phillips’ setting of Psalm 95, Sing for Joy.

The first leader of the ISS was Lt.Colonel Norman Bearcroft, who wrote this arrangement of General Catherine Baird’s lovely words, published in 1991 and requested by John.
In Jesus’ steps
Coming almost up to date with this next song, suggested by Vicky and published in 2018, ‘I have seen the glory’ also proved somewhat of a challenge to our songsters, especially the sopranos! However, the beautiful voices of the ISS paint a dramatic picture with these descriptive words.

This beautiful unaccompanied arrangement of words written at the end of the 19th century is a favourite song of mine. It was performed by the current ISS, along with many former members, at a festival in Regent Hall at the start of their celebration year.
Christ of Calvary
We’re going to finish with the song which has probably become the signature song of the ISS since it was first introduced in 1995, during Len Ballantine’s period as leader. When referring to the song Len Ballantine writes: ‘… no matter how grand the name given to him, the words used are but mere labels. They can never contain the essence of the Saviour of the world. He is bigger than his names. He is greater than the label we assign him… Yes, he is shepherd, but he is more than that. Yes, he is counsellor, but he is more than that. Yes, he is wonderful, but he is much more than that. He goes beyond our highest hopes and fondest dreams.’ ‘More than wonderful’ was recorded at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon just prior to lockdown.
